The interpretive systems

Gene Keys

Where they come from. Richard Rudd worked alongside Ra Uru Hu in the 1990s, then moved away to follow his own, more contemplative path. He published The Gene Keys in 2009. He takes up the 64 hexagrams of the I Ching and the calculated positions of Human Design, but changes their use: it is no longer a map of how one functions, but a support for contemplation, to be practiced over time.

What they draw on. The same data as Human Design: date, time and place of birth. Eleven planetary positions become eleven spheres, each carrying a key from 1 to 64. Each key is read on three levels: the Shadow, the reflex that takes over under pressure; the Gift, the same energy at ease; the Siddhi, its highest form. The spheres are grouped into three sequences: the Activation, which concerns the calling; Venus, which concerns relationships and the opening of the heart; the Pearl, which concerns prosperity.

What they are for. To spot, in each sphere, the character's reflex under stress and the form it takes once released. These are not three different things, but a single energy in three registers. The rule of the system is therefore never to suppress a shadow, but to let it transform into a gift: that is the path toward the best version of the character. The sequences give the order of this work: the calling first, then the heart, then prosperity.

The Book gives its framework. The system itself asks you to live with a key for weeks: it is practiced more than it is learned.
